Reflection Question 4: Magi is a difficult word to translate. They were originally instructors and teachers of Persian Kings. They were skilled in philosophy, medicine and science. A modern day group of political advisors. It is no wonder that they caused King Herod concern. Herod was paranoid that a leader would arise to overthrown him. He killed his wife and 3 sons out of this fear. In ancient times a bright star was a sign of a new king being born. They arrive at Jerusalem thinking of a birth in the palace. Instead they are told of the prophecy of Bethlehem. They arrive at the crib and offer homage. They had to change their ideas about power, about God and about man. God’s power is not like that of the powerful of this world. How does the crib shatter your ideas about God’s way of saving humanity?
